Mobile: Microsoft with Barnes & Noble?

by mcampbell on May 10, 2012

A new subsidiary is born. The new company will offer digital content and academic services. Microsoft’s initial investment is $300 Million giving them a 17.6% stake in the company. Another $305 is committed over the next five years. This is a serious investment. Barnes and Noble, who was losing to Amazon, can use this cash injection to develop Nook and add content.

So … is Microsoft is committed to Android? Oh no, it’s not! It needs content to have a decent mobile offering with Windows 8. Barnes and Noble gives Microsoft access to a large assortment of quality media: ebooks, magazines, and newspapers, plus textbooks. By partnering with Amazon’s competitor, it hopes to emulate the massive success that Kindle Fire experienced in Q4 of 2011.

It will be interesting to see if Nook morphs into Windows 8 in the future …
